Sir George Sweeney
Sir George has a BA in History and Politics and an MA in Politics from the University of Hull and has worked in the further education system since 1967. He took up his present post as Principal of Knowsley Community College in 1990, and was knighted in 2000 for services to FE.
Knowsley Community College was designated as a Beacon College by the Further Education Funding Council (FEFC) in 1999. In 2004, it was again designated a Beacon College by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
In addition to his responsibilities as Principal, Sir George holds a number of positions on national bodies. He is a member of the FEFC, the Learning and Skills Council, the Kennedy Committee and the Council for Lifelong Learning (UK) – successor body to FENTO. He is also Chair of the Association of Colleges (AoC)/LSC Self Regulation Group.
