Context
In terms of sheer volume and impact, the biggest challenge facing the UK today is tackling the Skills for Life deficit. The statistics speak for themselves: five million adults of working age with no qualifications, one in six people without the literacy skills expected of an 11 year old and more than half of the adult population lacking functional numeracy skills.
Through learndirect, Ufi has built up a reputation for attracting back into learning some of the people the government most needs to reach. In 2005/06, 90 per cent of learndirect learners were qualified below level two or were assessed as having a basic skills need.
