Improving skills, creating potential

Context

Skill shortages continue to be a problem for employers both when recruiting new staff and with existing staff, yet up to 35 per cent of employers fail to invest in training.

Skills development is often not seen as a priority or employers do not know where, or how, to access training.

Alternatively, they worry about the cost to their business, both financially and in staff time. E-learning provides a solution for employers wanting to offer their workforce targeted training to develop specific skills flexibly and at low cost.

The total value of the UK training market is estimated to be £4.4bn per annum. In terms of adoption of e-learning, the US leads the world. Current evidence indicates 28 per cent of US business training is done online, suggesting e-learning is likely to account for a more significant proportion of the UK’s training market by 2011.
