After twelve years of unemployment caused by disability Jane Lyon (52) felt a strong sense of vocation to become a Minister in the Church of England. It was only when her ability to do this was challenged that Jane sought the help of learndirect.

Jane explains: “Before my illness really began to affect me I had been employed full time as a Business Analyst in ICT development so I knew I was capable intellectually. However my confidence had been badly knocked by the effects of living with severe chronic fatigue and such limited mobility I have to use a wheelchair.

“I’d been a volunteer with local and national charities for several years but deep down inside I felt that I should be doing something different with my life and become a Minister. When I enquired about being considered for selection for training I was told there were concerns over my ability and the affect the training may have on my health.

“This incensed me so I picked myself up, dusted myself down and was absolutely determined to prove to myself and others exactly what I was capable of.

“As I live in Derby I contacted the University of Derby and explained the situation. They were extremely helpful and suggested Learning through Work with learndirect, which seemed ridiculous as I was unemployed but they said that the term ‘work’ includes much more than paid work.

“The University agreed to allow me to use my life experience to formulate a Masters degree unique to me and my interests. I designed the course with the help of the University who ensured it met with examiners standards. learndirect provided all of the technical support which meant I could study from home at my own pace.

“I have since achieved a Masters Degree in ethical practice in personal and professional development, which I passed with merit. During my learning, I had an article published in a social care professional journal. Since completing my course, the new study and research skills that I learned have enabled me to carry out various pieces of research and consultancy for the University of Derby , including preparing learning materials on equality and diversity for new learners.

“My life has changed so drastically. Learning through Work gave me the confidence and credibility to affect the shape of my future.

Doors which had previously been closed to me have now opened. Learning through Work helped me to be taken seriously and given the same opportunities as others. Next month I begin my training to become a Minister and with my Masters Degree under my belt I can set out on this new chapter of my life with confidence.
