Stephen Timms
Local employment partnerships

Stephen Timms is Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Previously he was Minister for Competitiveness at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and Minister for Pensions Reform in the DWP. Stephen entered Parliament in 1994 as MP for Newham North East, and has been MP for East Ham since 1997.
Simon Bartley
Celebrate success and achievement

Simon Bartley is Chief Executive of UK Skills. He is a past Chair of the CBI SME Council and is currently a member of their Education and Training Committee. He leads for Sector Skills Councils on the development of Diplomas and is Chair of SummitSkills, the Sector Skills Council for the Building Services Engineering Sector. He is a member of the City and Guilds Council and the Skills Commission.


Stuart Bernau
Learning the skills employers need

Stuart Bernau is Group Retail Director at the Nationwide Building Society. He is a Member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. He is Chairman of the Financial Services Skills Council and he was Chairman of the Council of Mortgage Lenders Executive Committee in 2005.
John Cridland
What does business need?

John Cridland was appointed Deputy Director-General of the CBI in 2000 and is responsible for the management of the CBI’s policy and membership activities. He joined the CBI in 1982 and was appointed Director of Human Resources Policy in 1995. He is a member of the National Learning and Skills Council.


Kirstie Donnelly
Flexibility through technology

Kirstie Donnelly is Director of Products and Marketing at Ufi, with responsibility for managing the marketing, design and build of Ufi’s course portfolio. She has worked in the e-learning sector for more than 15 years, and has had roles including Director of Learning Solutions for Video Arts and Director of ICT and Lifelong Learning at Manchester Training and Enterprise Council.
David Frost
Young people ready for work

David Frost has been Director-General of the British Chambers of Commerce since January 2003. Prior to this he was Chief Executive of Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce and Business Link. He is Chairman of the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship, a Board Member of Ufi Ltd and also a member of the National Employer Advisory Board for the Reserve Forces.


Karen Price
Technology success is about people

Karen Price is CEO of e-skills UK, the employer-led Sector Skills Council for IT and Telecoms. Her early career was in education prior to wide-ranging roles in business, including directorships in the construction and publishing industries, leading company startups, and also holding a number of roles in IBM UK’s Corporate Affairs and Global Services divisions.
Ruth Spellman
People who have learnt to learn

Ruth Spellman, the former Chief Executive of Investors in People UK (IIP UK), is now the Institution of Mechanical Engineer’s first female chief executive since its establishment in 1847. Prior to joining IIP UK, Ruth was HR director for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) for seven years, leading the organisation through a major modernisation programme.


Stephen Uden
What skills do employers want?

Stephen Uden is Head of Skills and Economic Affairs at Microsoft. He is responsible for ensuring Microsoft makes a contribution to the creation of economic opportunity for the UK through the use of IT. Stephen manages Microsoft’s skills programmes within formal education, workforce development, the IT industry and wider society, which includes a network of 600 IT Academies and regional digital literacy programmes.
