learndirect e-learner is an inspiration

The learndirect e-learner of the year award was presented to Ada Horan at the Inspire Awards 2007 ceremony at the Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay.

e-learner, Ada Horan with Head of learndirect in Wales, Jeff Greenidge and presenters Sarra Elgan (S4C) and Jason Mohammad (BBC).

The Inspire Awards for Adult Learners’ Week bring to life the learning stories
of adults across Wales and highlight the creativity, imagination and energy
adults bring to learning. The awards, which were co-ordinated by Niace Dysgu Cymru are held to encourage
people across Wales to continue learning.

2007’s e-learner of the year, Ada Horan, decided that as her 5 children had grown up, the time was right to get
back into full-time employment. Ada had left school with no qualifications,
and at 54, took the plunge and decided to register on a learndirect

programme. By studying a literacy and numeracy course at T2 Skills in Newport, Ada is intending to use her new skills as a stepping stone to getting full time employment.

Ada explains, “I decided to complete numeracy and literacy to enable me to get a job. These qualifications have now given me confi dence in myself to achieve more. I realise now anything
is possible if you put the work in”.

Through her hard work, Ada has now achieved Level 1 qualifications, completing assessments in each
course in her own time, and

taking the tests online.

Jeff Greenidge, Head of learndirect in Wales adds: “Ada is an inspiration to others. Now that her children have grown up, Ada is doing something for herself. Returning to education in order to gain essential skills to re-enter the workforce can be daunting but Ada has shown just how determined she is to succeed and
reach her full potential. learndirect wish Ada the very best for the future and hope that her learning journey will continue for many years”.
