learndirect supports teaching
training at Yale College
Staff at Yale College and North East Wales Institute (NEWI) have incorporated learndirect courses into their Higher Education Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme to support teacher training students in reaching the required standards in literacy and numeracy.
learndirect Partnership Manager at Yale College, Sarah Williams, supports a teacher training student on a learndirect course
learndirect Partnership
Manager at Yale College,
Sarah Williams said: “We
use learndirect ’s Word
and Number skills checks to
map the skills levels of each
teacher training student and
where necessary we allocate learndirect courses to build
skills. Students can eventually
achieve the Nationally
recognised Certificates in
Adult Literacy and Numeracy
through learndirect to verify
their skills at level 2.
"All students must achieve a
level 2 quali fication to prove
their ability and learndirect
has offered a flexible and
convenient way for us to
manage this requirement."
“The very nature of learndirect allows students
to undertake skills checks
in their own time and follow
a personalised learning
programme to meet the
required skills level.”
Every student on the PGCE
programme at Yale College
enrols on a learndirect
course to gain first hand
experience of online learning
and many student teachers
evaluate learndirect material
for use with their own
learners.
Sarah added:“One module
within the PGCE programme
requires learners to produce
10 hours of flexible learning
materials and many of
our students have used learndirect courses for this.
Some of our learners have
used IT courses from the learndirect portfolio for their own benefit too, to build their
IT skills in their own time.
“learndirect has enabled
us to meet a number of
requirements on the PGCE
programme and has enabled
our teacher training students
to experiment with the flexible
style of online learning. learndirect offers a wide
range of high-quality courses
and their flexible route of
delivery is increasingly
becoming an important
element of the teaching mix.”
Head of learndirect in
Wales, Jeff Greenidge
said: “As an ex-teacher,
I am aware of the need
to engage learners through
a variety of delivery methods.
I am delighted that students
on the PGCE programme
at Yale are experiencing
online learning and using learndirect courses, not
only for their own benefit,
but are evaluating these
courses for use with
students in their future
teaching careers.”
